San Francisco Chronicle Letter to the Editor: Kounalakis is right choice
October 18, 2018
Eleni Kounalakis brings the experience of a seasoned diplomat, management experience of public agencies, and innovation and vision required to be successful in the private sector.
Kounalakis is the only candidate uniquely qualified to serve the functions of lieutenant governor.
As the president of one of the largest housing development companies in California and through her experience on the San Francisco Port Commission, Kounalakis knows how to create economic growth and security.
As an employer and through her experience on the First 5 California Commission, she knows what students need to thrive in the 21st century job market. And as the daughter of an immigrant father, Kounalakis also represents the American dream; in just one generation, she became the first Greek American to serve as a U.S. ambassador.
In California, we believe that we are a beacon of progress, yet when it comes to electing women, our track record is abysmal — only 24 percent of California’s state legislators are women, and never before has a woman been elected as California’s lieutenant governor. It is time to change that.
Record numbers of women are running for office, because we know that the key to being represented by government is to elect leaders who are actually representative of the population.
