SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 - San Francisco City College Board of Trustees President Thea Selby Endorses Eleni Kounalakis for Lieutenant Governor


Selby leads a growing roster of prominent Californians boosting Kounalakis’ bid for Lt. Governor.

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco City College Board of Trustees President* Thea Selby formally endorsed Eleni Kounalakis for Lieutenant Governor. In her statement, Selby praised Kounalakis for her commitment to affordable college for all Californians.

“Ambassador Eleni Kounalakis Eleni has the vision and conviction necessary to fight for a better and stronger California. As Lieutenant Governor, Eleni will be a powerful advocate for free community college and for students who deserve access to affordable higher education. I am proud to support Eleni for Lieutenant Governor.”

Governor,” said Kounalakis. “Thea’s leadership in San Francisco as an advocate for education is a model for anyone running for public service. San Francisco’s city colleges are now tuition free making higher education available to future leaders of our communities. As Lt. Governor, I look forward to the opportunity to work with education leaders like Thea across the state to make all community colleges tuition free.”

Kounalakis comes armed with a growing list of endorsements from prominent Democratic elected officials, like U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, Representatives Anna Eshoo, Doris Matsui, and Mike Thompson, former State Senator Mark Leno, and Sacramento Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.

Kounalakis is a businesswoman and diplomat.  She was appointed by President Barack Obama as Ambassador in 2010. She is a life-long Democrat and five-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention and worked as an advocate for early childhood education as a member of California's First 5 Commission, and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism.

She was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to lead the California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council and served as a member of the San Francisco Port Commission. Prior to serving our country in the diplomatic corps, she was president of AKT Development Corporation in Sacramento, where she grew up. She is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Dartmouth College. She and her husband, Markos, live in San Francisco where they are raising their two teenage sons.
