December 1, 2017 - Eleni Kounalakis Attends 38th Annual Farm Worker Appreciation Breakfast

Kounalakis, whose immigrant father started out as a farm worker, joins in celebration of Farm Workers at Imperial County event

San Francisco –  Today, candidate for Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis joined the 38th annual Farm Worker Appreciation Breakfast attended by over 3,000 farm workers at the America’s Job Center of California in Calexico. Eleni’s visit to Imperial County marks 56 counties visited on her 58 county tour of California.

“I am thrilled to be part of the celebration honoring Imperial County’s farmworkers,” said Kounalakis. “As the daughter of an immigrant who started out in California as a farmworker, I know how important it is to thank this community for their work. We have an obligation to give farm workers fair pay and safe working conditions. As Lt. Governor, I will work to ensure that farm workers are given every opportunity to succeed in California.”

Earlier this year, Kounalakis announced her support of the Agricultural Program Act of 2017 championed by Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris. This bill creates a program allowing agricultural workers and their families to apply for a ‘Blue Card’ granting them legal status and work authorization if they meet certain criteria. Kounalakis believes this bill is critical to securing the rights of undocumented workers and allows them to fully participate in their communities.

Kounalakis comes armed with a growing list of endorsements from prominent Democratic elected officials and organizations, like U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, EMILY’s List, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, Representatives Nanette Barragan, Anna Eshoo, Doris Matsui, Jimmy Panetta, and Mike Thompson, former State Senator Mark Leno, Sacramento Assembly members Blanca Rubio and Kevin McCarty, CA Women’s List, and the Fresno, Marin, and Ventura County Young Democrats.

Kounalakis is a business woman and diplomat. She was appointed by President Barack Obama as Ambassador to Hungary in 2010. She is a life-long Democrat and five-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention and worked as an advocate for early childhood education as a member of California's First 5 Commission and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism.

She was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to lead the California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council and served as a member of the San Francisco Port Commission. Prior to serving our country in the diplomatic corps, she was president of AKT Development Corporation in Sacramento, where she grew up. She is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Dartmouth College. She and her husband, Markos, live in San Francisco where they are raising their two teenage sons.
