January 2, 2018 - Eleni Kounalakis Raises $2.3 Million In 2017 For Lt. Governor Race

Begins 2018 with nearly $2 million cash on hand

San Francisco – Eleni Kounalakis, who announced her candidacy in April of 2017, raised over $2.3 million in 2017 for her campaign for Lt. Governor. She will report nearly $2 million cash on hand when the campaign finance statements are filed on January 31, 2018.

Kounalakis, a Democrat, begins 2018 as the candidate with the clear advantage in the financial resources necessary to win the Top Two primary race for Lt. Governor in June. With nearly 1,500 contributions, Kounalakis more than doubled the number of contributions she received the first reporting period - a clear demonstration of the growing momentum of her campaign for Lt. Governor.

“I am so grateful for all the support I have received for my campaign for Lt. Governor,” said Kounalakis. “After traveling to all 58 counties, building a grassroots campaign throughout the state, and receiving financial support from so many supporters, I know that we are on track to create a winning campaign for a better, stronger California.”

In this most recent reporting period, which runs from July 1 to December 31, 2017, Kounalakis raised over $600,000 and contributed $250,000 to her campaign, bringing her total raised to over $850,000 for the reporting period.

Kounalakis’ campaign continues to gain momentum with recent endorsements from Equality California, the California Federation of Teachers, and California State University Employees Union SEIU 2579.

Other prominent endorsers include U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, EMILY’s List, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, Representatives Nanette Barragan, Anna Eshoo, Zoe Lofgren, Doris Matsui, Jimmy Panetta, Eric Swalwell, and Mike Thompson, former State Senator Mark Leno, Sacramento Assembly members Blanca Rubio and Kevin McCarty, CA Women’s List, and the Fresno, Marin, and Ventura County Young Democrats.

Kounalakis recently completed her tour of California’s 58 counties, with final stops in Imperial County for the 38th Annual Farmworker Appreciation Breakfast, Monterey for a meeting of the Monterey Young Democrats, and San Benito to meet with Democratic activists and community members.

Kounalakis is a business woman and diplomat. She was appointed by President Barack Obama as Ambassador to Hungary in 2010. She is a life-long Democrat and five-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention and worked as an advocate for early childhood education as a member of California's First 5 Commission and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism.

She was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to lead the California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council and served as a member of the San Francisco Port Commission. Prior to serving our country in the diplomatic corps, she was president of AKT Development Corporation in Sacramento, where she helped deliver tens of thousands of affordable homes for middle class families. Kounalakis was born and raised in Sacramento and is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Dartmouth College. She and her husband, Markos, live in San Francisco where they are raising their two teenage sons.
