Democratic organization joins a growing roster of prominent Californians supporting Kounalakis’ bid for Lt. Governor

San Francisco – Today, the Fresno Young Democrats formally endorsed Eleni Kounalakis for Lieutenant Governor. In their statement, they praised Eleni’s commitment to affordable education, immigrant rights, and economic prosperity for all Californians.

"Eleni Kounalakis is the right choice for California's next Lieutenant Governor and the Fresno Young Democrats are proud to endorse her campaign,” said James Martinez, Chair, Fresno Young Democrats. “Eleni understands how affordable higher education can open doors for young people across the state. She is committed to protecting DREAMers and fighting for immigrants and the LGBTQ community. Her dedication to issues that impact the future of California and our generation are inspiring, and we look forward to working with her when she wins.”

“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of the Fresno Young Democrats,” said Kounalakis. “Young people are the future and we have to work together to create a better tomorrow. As the parent of two teenagers, I see the world around them changing and I want to do everything I can so they have the same opportunities and experiences afforded to me. Our democracy works best when everyone is engaged, and I am honored to work alongside young political activists who are making their communities stronger every day by talking about policies, advocating for transparent, responsive governance, and holding their elected officials accountable.”

Kounalakis comes armed with a growing list of endorsements from prominent Democratic elected officials, like U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, Representatives Anna Eshoo, Doris Matsui, and Mike Thompson, former State Senator Mark Leno, and Sacramento Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.

Kounalakis is a business woman and diplomat. She was appointed by President Barack Obama as Ambassador to Hungary in 2010. She is a life-long Democrat and five-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention and worked as an advocate for early childhood education as a member of California's First 5 Commission, and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism.

She was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to lead the California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council and served as a member of the San Francisco Port Commission. Prior to serving our country in the diplomatic corps, she was president of AKT Development Corporation in Sacramento, where she grew up. She is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Dartmouth College. She and her husband, Markos, live in San Francisco where they are raising their two teenage sons.
